The Importance of Reading Habit for Students
Reading is one of the most essential habits that students should develop to support their academic and personal growth. It is a gateway to knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking. Through reading, students can expand their vocabulary, improve their writing skills, and gain a deeper understanding of various subjects. Unlike passive activities like watching television, reading engages the brain actively, strengthening concentration and comprehension.
First, reading helps improve academic performance. Students who read regularly are often better at understanding complex concepts and performing well in subjects such as language, science, and social studies. They can process information faster and are more comfortable with analytical thinking. This gives them a strong advantage in class discussions, exams, and assignments.
Second, reading develops emotional intelligence and empathy. When students read fiction, they are introduced to different characters, situations, and emotions. This allows them to understand perspectives different from their own, helping them grow into more empathetic and thoughtful individuals. Non-fiction books, on the other hand, can expose them to real-world issues and global cultures, broadening their horizons.
In conclusion, reading is more than just a school requirement—it is a life skill that brings long-term benefits. Parents, teachers, and schools should encourage students to read daily by providing interesting books and creating a reading-friendly environment. By making reading a habit, students can unlock their potential and prepare themselves for a brighter future.

The Legend of Timun Mas
Once upon a time in a small village in Central Java, there lived a poor widow named Mbok Srini. She was lonely and longed for a child. Every day she prayed to the gods to bless her with a baby. One day, a mysterious giant passed by her house and heard her wishes. The giant offered her a deal: he would give her a child, but when the child turned 17 years old, she must return her to him. Desperate, Mbok Srini agreed.
Soon after, the giant gave her a large golden cucumber seed. Mbok Srini planted it in her garden, and a few months later, a big cucumber grew. When she cut it open, she was surprised to find a beautiful baby girl inside. She named the baby Timun Mas, which means "Golden Cucumber." Timun Mas grew into a kind, clever, and strong girl, loved by everyone in the village.
As Timun Mas approached her 17th birthday, Mbok Srini became anxious. She didn’t want to lose her daughter. She went to a wise hermit in the mountains who gave her four magical items: cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste (terasi). He told her to give them to Timun Mas to help her escape from the giant. On the day the giant came to take her, Timun Mas ran away and used the magical items one by one.
She threw the cucumber seeds, which grew into a thick forest. The giant struggled through it. Then she threw the needles, turning the ground into a sharp bamboo forest. Still, the giant chased her. The salt created a vast sea, but the giant swam across. Finally, Timun Mas threw the shrimp paste, which turned into a boiling swamp. The giant fell in and never came back. Timun Mas returned safely to her mother, and they lived happily ever after, free from fear.

Thomas Alva Edison
Thomas Alva Edison was one of the most prolific inventors in history, known for developing devices that have greatly influenced life around the world. He was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio, USA. As a child, Edison showed curiosity and an independent spirit. He had little formal schooling and was mostly self-taught, fueled by his love for reading and experimenting. His hearing problems began at a young age, which later shaped his solitary focus on invention and innovation.
Edison's career as an inventor took off in the late 19th century. One of his first major inventions was the phonograph in 1877, a device that could record and play back sound — a groundbreaking achievement that amazed the public and established his reputation as a genius. A few years later, he developed the practical incandescent light bulb, which would go on to revolutionize the world by replacing gas and oil lamps with safer, longer-lasting electric light.
To support his inventions, Edison established the first industrial research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he and his team worked on hundreds of innovations. Over the course of his life, he received over 1,000 patents, including for the electric power system, the motion picture camera (kinetoscope), and improvements to the telegraph and telephone. His work laid the foundation for modern electric utilities and film technology.
Despite facing criticism for being more of a skilled entrepreneur than a pure scientist, Edison’s determination, creativity, and business sense transformed ideas into real-world applications. He passed away on October 18, 1931, in West Orange, New Jersey. Today, Edison is remembered not only for his inventions but also for his famous quote, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration,” reflecting his belief in hard work and perseverance.
