Explanation Text: How a Rainbow Is Formed

A rainbow is a natural phenomenon that is formed when sunlight interacts with water droplets in the atmosphere. It is usually seen after it rains, when the sun comes out while the air is still filled with moisture.

The process begins when sunlight enters a water droplet. As the light enters, it is refracted, or bent, due to the change in medium from air to water. Inside the droplet, the light is then reflected off the inner surface of the droplet. After being reflected, the light exits the droplet and is refracted again as it moves from water back into the air.

During this process, the light is separated into its different colors because each color is bent by a different amount. This separation of light is what creates the beautiful spectrum of colors that we see in a rainbow.

A rainbow is typically seen when the observer has their back to the sun and looks toward a sky where rain or mist is present. The colors that appear in a rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—are produced by the dispersion of sunlight through countless water droplets.
